Humans and Animation 03
Before oral tradition, symbols, letters, decorative pictures, and physical movements, "water mirrors" and "shadow puppets" succeeded in copying society and people more clearly. Unfortunately, however, the water and shadow copiers did not have a medium to store them.
When there was still complete darkness in the city, after the camera obscura and other things, the collaboration between a light source such as fire and a transparent glass plate finally appeared, and this was the dawn of the history of projection.
After the early days of the magic lantern, the world changed course dramatically, from witnessing phenomena to active creative acts.
Animation is a mirror that reflects the human spirit and emotions, and at the same time, it is a medium that can depict and record various ideas that transcend time, such as life, history, and impressions.
In modern society, animation can also function as one of the important grief works(*). Abstract art and patterns help people to transform their inner thoughts into shapes.
------------
(*) Grief work: Here, it refers to the process of releasing the inner self and repression and discovering the positive self. In recent years, animation has also been used in cognitive therapy in psychiatry. Harada often encouraged students to project their painful experiences and pent-up feelings into their artwork.
-----------
*In 2001, animation was made into a national policy by the far-right Koizumi administration and the business community, and this hideous policy has continued to this day under the pretext of strengthening international competitiveness. The Japan Business Federation has finally called for the establishment of a "Ministry of Contents" and demanded the government to inject large amounts of tax money. With "Dini Rincho" in 1981, the government became a corporation and is working together with the business community to advance politics. They often promote themselves to young people by saying that "being a creator is a job full of dreams," but in their hearts, all they care about is making money.

Film noise and grain are beautiful 07
Even if a film is shot on 35mm film, the quality of the image may be intentionally degraded.
Films and images come in a variety of quality levels, due to various ingenuity and experimentation.Films show what kind of film equipment was available at the time, and how film technicians at the time devised the quality of the film.
Therefore, companies should not be allowed to digitally remaster films excessively in order to make profits. In Japan, companies also use the 1971 amendment to the Film Copyright Act to make unauthorized changes to films, which is essentially a violation of the moral rights of copyright.
Disney's "Bambi" was altered to have flat, plastic-like mechanical quality by removing not only scratches and dust, but also all film grain. This is out of the question.
Old animation cameramen pressed the shutter for each frame, which resulted in subtle grain and exposure. The deterioration of the film tells us the age of the work.
Films are living things that can convey their age, history, and information to future generations.

”August without an Emperor” 1978 credit: Shochiku
Below is a part where the film was projected onto a wall and then re-shot.
Below are some examples of intentionally degrading image quality using 8mm or 16mm film.
However, in Hollywood, there are cases where a film is digitally remastered after more than a year of research. In particular, the digital remastering of Francis Ford Coppola's films has been a success, with increased contrast, enhanced blacks, and the use of film grain.

Banyu Inryoku (Universal gravitation)
Today we went to see "The Birdcage Searches for a Bird - K" (an experimental play based on Franz Kafka) by "Engeki jikkenshitsu Banyu Inryoku (Theater Laboratory Universal Gravitation)" (a theater company led by J.A. Seazer) at an underground theater in Tokyo.

For reference: "Invisible Theater," which the same theater company performed in 2021, was an experimental play that unfolded in the dark.

Animation discussion by the dialectic materialism 05
In Japan, around the 12th and 13th centuries: After the Heian and Kamakura eras of "Choju-giga" (Cartoon Animals Paintings), manga expressions and still images continued to develop in time and space.
For information on the moving pictureso and animation expressions seen in ancient Japanese picture scrolls, please refer to the works of the late Taihei Imamura and Isao Takahata. The pursuit of these moving pictures has been passed down through the ages to "Edo Utsushi-e" (Edo utsushi-e) and "Tachi-e" (standing pictures).
In 1266, the lens was conceived in Europe. As a result, gimmick toys, hand-cranked machines, and magic lanterns (imported to Japan during the Keian era) were invented.
In 1682, overseas frame-on-frame comics with speech bubbles appeared. After ancient animation visual devices such as the thaumatrope and zoetrope in the 1980s, photography technology and film equipment were developed.
In the 1890s, the first frame-on-frame animation appeared in France. In 1895, the Lumiere brothers showed a film in Paris. In 1896, films were imported into Japan and released to the public.
Domestic animation began to be produced around 1902. At the time, it was mainly produced by individual artists.
In 1909, the first foreign animation was shown to the public in Japan.
In 1923, full-scale animation of "manga" began in Japan.
During World War I, full-scale commercial animation appeared in the United States, with a division of labor between managers, producers, and animation technicians. The animation technology system that we use today (tap(Japanese English.peg-bar), book(Japanese English.reusing materials), and cel animation, etc.) was launched.
Commercial animation became popular and was widely used in wars both at home and abroad.
Many Japanese animators were killed in action during World War II.
