Political expression of “MIDORI” by cipher(MIDORI's Political Expression 1)
''MIDORI'' has various political expressions hidden behind codes.
Only those who are aware of the problem can understand it.
Harada's 90-minute version of MIDORI for ATG included an episode in which Muchisute became a disabled soldier due to the war, and Midori's family was in poverty after the war.
However, the 90-minute version never materialized.
The depiction of poverty in Tokyo that appears at the beginning of the 50-minute edition is a remnant from the 90th edition.
Harada wanted to convey to the audience that ''MIDORI'' is a political work. This is because the lives of common people and poverty are integral to politics.
Harada wanted the audience to think about history and politics.
At the end of the ending, there is a credit saying "結社球根栽培(Kessha Kyukonsaibai/association:Bulb cultivation. *(This is the nuance of a secret society)."
Doji Morita also sang ''球根栽培の唄(Kyukonsaibai no uta/Song of Bulb Cultivation)''.
What is "Bulb cultivation"?
In January 1950, Stalin began interfering with the Japanese Communist Party in order to force an armed struggle in Japan.
Kyuichi Tokuda and Sanzo Nosaka, who were members of the Japanese Communist Party at the time, unofficially established a separate organization within the party in response to Stalin's request.
On June 6, MacArthur issued an order to expel all 24 members of the Japanese Communist Party's central committee, including members of the Diet, from public office.
Taking advantage of this, Tokuda and his colleagues formed a temporary leadership group with assistance from the Soviet Union and the Chinese Communist Party without holding any meetings. He then instructed party members to engage in armed struggle.
At this time, a bomb manual called ''The Book of Bulb Cultivation'' was created. Since it was illegal, a code was used.
In 1955, Kenji Miyamoto became chairman of the Japanese Communist Party, opposed interference by the Soviet Union and the Chinese Communist Party, and stipulated in the party's platform the complete renunciation of armed revolution.
At the time, activists, mainly university students, were preparing for an armed struggle under the direction of the party. But they suddenly felt that the party's policy had changed. "All our hard work was wasted." Young activists suffered a setback.
This led to a split between the left wing and the new left wing. The affirmation of armed struggle was taken over by the New Left. The Japanese Communist Party advocated parliamentary reform.
(The situation at this time was depicted in the film ''Japanese Night and Fog'' by Nagisa Oshima.)
When ''MIDORI'' was screened in Nakano, one of the projectionists immediately noticed the ''bulb cultivation'' in the ending credits.
Projectionists said to Harada. "I see. That's why you put the credit at the end to make it stand out the most, right?" Harada: "Yes."
(He also noticed the photograph of the Emperor in ''MIDORI''.)
Harada has supported the Japanese Communist Party ever since he was a high school student. However, when it comes to raising issues in his work, he is interested in aspects such as violence and setbacks. When creating works or raising issues, he believes that it is easier to convey ideas that are radical and illegal than those that are moderate and peaceful.
In the 1990s, when "MIDORI" was released, many films ignored political issues.
Harada wanted to convey to the audience that ''MIDORI'' is a work with a political perspective.
Furthermore, "association Bulb cultivation" does not exist in reality. It's in Harada's heart.
