From experimental theater from the 1990s

Perhaps inspired by the special format of MIDORI (1992), the actress who played Kanabun subsequently staged an outdoor play in a huge building called Yushima Seido (http://www.seido.or.jp/yushima.html), built in 1690. MIDORI staff also helped her with this endeavor.

As a minimalistic experiment, a filmmaker in his 20s who was a staff member at MIDORI borrowed a generator from a street stall and screened 8mm film in a busy area in front of the station. Only about 6 people actually participated. To avoid being arrested by the police, spectators put their arms around each other and pressed their shoulders together so that no one could see what they were doing from the outside.(A)

One theater company had a large sailing ship fly into the sky at the end of the performance. At the end, the seats suddenly shook, split from side to side, and a sailboat climbed into the sky from beneath the seats. It was performed in a large forest.(B)

The unit group, which included several former members of the Tenjo Sajiki theater company, performed outdoors on a vast reclaimed land next to the port. When the curtain opens, several actors walk toward the stage from afar. This had quite an impact. Eisenstein said that ''the expression of depth is limited in theater and film,'' but this experiment solved the problem. The typhoon had just passed, so the ground and audience seats were wet, which added to the sense of realism.(C)

J.A. Seazer's theater company ''Banyu Inryoku'', which inherited Shuji Terayama's experimental theater, has conducted many experiments.
Screenings of 8mm films shot during the Tenjo Sajiki era were held in a room in an apartment building. Taking advantage of the L-shaped floor plan of the apartment, an 8mm film was screened in one room, and an experimental play with actors, lighting, and music was performed in the next room. Movies and plays were performed alternately and sometimes at the same time. (D)

An experimental play by ''Banyu Inryoku''.
Shibuya's underground small theater ''JanJan'' also has an L-shaped structure.
Taking advantage of this L-shape, ''Banyu Inryoku'' created an opening and closing curtain in the center of the stage, and sometimes performed separate plays for the audience in two directions. There were different plays on each side, and sometimes the curtains were opened and they were performed at the same time.
The scenes where one audience was shown nothing and only the other audience was shown stimulated the audience's curiosity and imagination.
Audiences often couldn't see all the scenes at Tenjyo Sajiki and Banyu Inryoku's plays at once, so some customers spent several days attending the plays. (E)

This is also "Banyu Inryoku". An experimental play that took place in the 2000s. They recreated the experiments of the Tenjosajiki era.
Spectators gather at a shrine in Shibuya, where they are given maps and codes and dispersed. Audience members must find the theater on their own by solving maps and codes.
At this time, there were several audience members who got lost and were unable to reach the theater.

The theater is divided into several rooms, and different plays are performed in each room.
In Room A, actors are performing in a box with multiple peepholes.

The audience is divided into several groups and takes turns visiting multiple rooms. (F)
